ARGENTINA: Wind power project hearing concludes positively in Pampa Malaspina, Chubut.

In recent days, there was a hearing for the wind farm Malaspina, a project submitted by the company Centro Eolico Pampa de Malaspina S.A., which envisages the deployment of about 40 wind turbines to be located in the town of Camarones, Chubut province.

This hearing was scheduled in the process of Environmental Impact Study Evaluation of the Law 5439 of the Environmental Code of Chubut province, in a joint action of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development Control and the Sub-Secretary of Environmental Management, with a notable presence and participation of citizens in general.

NICARAGUA: The wind farm Amayo will be inaugurated on February 15.

Recently, through a press release, the Ministry of Energy and Mines informed that the wind farm Amayo will be inaugurated on February 15, aiming to generate 40 MW with 19 wind turbines of 2.1 MW each.

With the addition of this wind project, a saving of $ 9 million in annual oil bill is estimated.

ARGENTINA: La Rioja has expansion project.

On recent days, it transpired that the company IMPSA obtained the tender for the expansion of the wind farm of La Rioja, on which more than 230 million pesos (Argentine) will be invested, and consist of 11 new wind turbines.

It will begin operations in 2010. The 11 turbines will have an output of 2.1MW, the model is IMPSA IWP-83 and will be built in factories that the company has in Mendoza.

NICARAGUA: Italian company would be willing to invest in wind energy development.

On recent days, the president of the Italian company R.E. WIND met with the Nicaraguan chancellor, who expressed interest in the European company to pursue wind energy development projects in the south region of the country.

Accordingly, the company was inclined towards the towns of Belen, Rivas, Cardenas, Potosi, San Jorge, San Juan del Sur and Tola.

MEXICO: Wind farms of the Isthmus will be operating in short-term.

On January 7, the CFE informed through the superintendent of the wind farm “La Venta”, that at least 5 private companies will start operations of their wind farms this year, and that their project La Venta III will be also operating.

Likewise, the representative of the CFE said that by the year 2010, they expect to run its project called Oaxaca I; it is important to mention that this project and La Venta III will have an installed capacity of 100MW each.

BRAZIL: Companies interested in auctions for wind energy.

In recent days, it was informed that Brazil will hold, in the second half of this year, an energy auction aiming specially for wind power, promoted through EPE (Energy Research Company).

The president of that company commented that European and Brazilian companies have already shown interest, as well as the company Iberdrola and EDP Energias do Brasil. This will enable greater presence of companies in this sector, and to start unlocking the development and consolidation of Brazilian wind power.

CHILE: The wind farm “Punta Palmeras” will have an investment of US $230 million.

On recent days, it was informed that the wind farm “Punta Palmeras”, held by the company Acciona Energia, in the region of Coquimbo, has successfully presented the Environmental Impact Study, in which they explain that this farm will contribute to lower greenhouse gases emissions.

At the same time, the company said that the wind farm will have an installed capacity of 103.5 MW, generated by 69 wind turbines of 1.5MW each, reaching an investment of 230 million dollars. The objective: provide and supply electricity to the Central Interconnected System (SIC).

MEXICO: Positive developments for wind project in Santa Catarina, state of Nuevo Leon.

In recent days, it finally transpired that the company in charge of the development of the wind project in Santa Catarina, Econergy, said the project is secure: the same company will completely cover the costs caused by the delay; there is only one pending permit from the Environment and Natural Resources Secretary (Semarnat) to get it started.

Econergy´s Vice President stressed that the company has been investing valuable resources for years, as time and money, which led to the project to have a push itself to become a reality, so at this point they are in the process of signing agreements with most of the metropolitan municipalities for energy supply.

BRAZIL: Launch of Wind Atlas, innovative tool in the State of Alagoas.

On January 9, was held the official launch of the Wind Atlas in Maceio, Alagoas, tool that shows the trend of the winds through the exploration parameters that highlight the behavior of the weather in the region.

This initiative is the result of an agreement signed between Eletrobras, the Institute of Technology for Development (LACTEC) and the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal), entities that conducted a study together. To this end, the Director of Technology of Eletrobras commented that towers were installed, and set at three predetermined levels for obtaining an accurate measurement of the winds.

Natural Power acquires partner in Chile.

Natural Power, a leading international renewable energy consultancy, has acquired the Chilean firm LatWind Eolica Latinoamericana Ltda; the acquisition provides Natural Power with a base in Latin America to expand into the burgeoning renewables market there.

For a year prior to the acquisition, LatWind has worked as an agent for Natural Power. “We will continue working as before but now have access to more experienced wind energy professionals and new techniques within the industry. Natural Power helps us create value for our clients and generate know-how locally” commented Alexander von Pescatore, one of the co-founders of Latwind.

Continuing with its labor of promotion, education and defense of wind power in the region, LAWEA presents its first technical workshop, as an answer to the demand for knowledge of the implications of this technology relatively new for Latin America, from a deeper point of view.

By opening our technical workshops, we will explore the main aspects that include the development of a wind farm, from its analysis, evaluation and study, until its implementation, operation and maintenance. We will see practical experiences of the farms installed in the region, reported by the leaders of wind development in Latin America.
