CHILE: Senate Commission approved a project that promotes the Non-Conventional Renewable Energy

The commission of Mining and Energy of the Senate dispatched the bill on electric power generation with non-conventional renewable energy sources (NCRES) to the High Camera.

The bill establishes the necessary conditions to attract investment in non-conventional renewable energy projects, boosting the development of the market, removing the barriers regarding innovation that they face, and generating confidence in the energy market for this type of technology.

It was established that between the years 2010 and 2014, the obligation to supply energy with non-conventional renewable means will be 5%. Since then, the percentage will increase gradually by 0.5% a year, reaching 10% in the year 2024.

NICARAGUA: Rivas Could Enlighten the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua with Wind Power

By the year 2010, four wind projects in Rivas are expected to be producing altogether a total of 240MW of clean, secure and sustainable energy, and which production is enough to enlighten the entire Pacific of Nicaragua.

The investment of these 4 projects is higher than 250 million dollars, according to the amount that appears in the plans. Out of the four projects, two of them already have the permit of Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Marena).

The other two projects are currently in the environmental impact study presentation stage, and during this year, the license could be obtained.

GUATEMALA: Israeli Group Is Looking Forward to Invest $60 Million Dollars for Wind Power in Guatemala

Tahal Group is studying to invest over 60 million dollars for a 45MW wind power project.

Consortium staff is already evaluating sectors and areas with potential for the installation of a wind farm. Tahal could be installed in the country during this year.

In the last years, some other Israeli companies have invested over 200 million dollars on wind power projects.

CUBA: China and Cuba Signed a Contract Regarding Wind Power

Cuban and Chinese companies signed a contract in which the Caribbean island purchased six wind turbines of 750kW each for the wind farm Gibara 2.

This place, located in the province of Holguin, will have a total power of 4,500 kW.

The signing of this contract is not something momentary, since the island bets for a long-term development of renewable energies.

ARGENTINA: A Housing Tower Will Be Provided with Wind Power in "Playa Grande"

The Céfira is the first housing tower energetically sustainable in Latin America, and one of the first urban ventures of this kind in the world. The windmill on the roof will provide energy to all eight floors.

The windmill of Céfira is expected to start working by February.

The wind power generator price was around $ 15.000, it was constructed by INVAP and will produce 4.5kW; this allows it to save energy for when there is not enough wind.

A bit more than $ 4 million were invested on the project.

PERU: MEM Gives an Electric Generation Temporary Grant to Petroleum Monterrico for 170MW

The Mines and Energy Ministery (MEM) gave a temporary grant to Monterrico Petroleum Company for the construction of the future wind farm La Brea, which is expected to have an installed capacity of 170MW, so that the company can develop some studies regarding the electricity generating activity. These studies will be held at the district of La Brea, province of Talara, at the Piura’s department.

The concessionaire is forced to carry out the studies, in compliance with the technical and safety standards, while preserving environment and the cultural heritage of the nation.

On March 27th LAWEA will elect its first board of directors

On March 27th, in Guadalajara, Mexico; it will be held the LAWEA’s General Assembly in order to elect our first board of directors.

The elected directors will have the responsibility of being the visible face of the association to the society and the leaders of the industry in the region. They will be the representation of the organization and will be in charge of formulating strategies regarding the fulfillment of our mission, to promote the development of Wind Energy in Latin America.

It is open now the call for papers for WIND EXPO LAWEA 2008. The authors of the best works will be invited as speakers in the conferences, and others selected papers will have a space in the posters section.

The deadline for abstract submission is March 14th.
