NEWS BRAZIL: Successful Osorio wind farm doubling capacity. Recent reports indicate that the Osorio wind farm has been licensed by the State Environmental Protection Foundation to carry out expansion work that would effectively double generation capacity, making the wind farm the largest in Latin America. Located around 80 km from Porto Alegre (state of Rio Grande do Sul), the wind farm received an initial investment of R$670 million. With seventy-five 2MW wind turbines wind turbines producing a total of 515 KW / h. the project has exceeded generation projections for its first year of operation, thereby avoiding the emission of 148,325 tons of CO2. CHILE: British wind power company seeks solutions for island’s lack of electricity supply. The English company SeaWind reported that they will conduct a wind resource evaluation on the island of Santa María (VIII Region), in an effort to provide electricity to the inhabitants of the island. The company will install wind measurement equipments for 3 months, during which time SeaWind will evaluate wind speed and direction, thereby defining the wind generation equipment required to produce electricity. MEXICO: Inauguration of EURUS wind farm, carried out by CEMEX and ACCIONA. The EURUS wind farm was inaugurated on January 22nd, the project is located on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (State of Oaxaca). It is led by the CEMEX cement company in conjunction with the Spanish company Acciona. Directors of both companies, along with Mexico’s President Calderon, Secretary of Energy, and others officials attended the launch. The EURUS wind farm began operations with an installed capacity of 37 MW produced by 25 wind turbines. The project is targeted to have by the end 2009 a total of 167 turbines at 1.5 MW each, based on Acciona Windpower technology, producing a total of 250.5 MW. MEXICO: President Calderon inaugurates “Parques Ecologicos de Mexico” wind farm. On January 22, Mexico´s president Felipe Calderón inaugurated the “Parques Ecologicos de Mexico” wind complex in the municipality of “Juchitan de Zaragoza”, in La Ventosa, Oaxaca. The president was accompanied by the Secretary of Energy, the CEO of Iberdrola Renewables and the Governor of the State of Oaxaca, among others. The wind farm, an Iberdrola project, will have 80 MW of installed generation capacity. The company expects a total annual production of 280 GW/h, meeting the power consumption needs of 100 thousand people. Iberdrola invested over $170 million dollars in the project including 120 million pesos in the region. The project is estimated to create some 300 jobs. The wind farm already has 30MW in operation. INTERNATIONAL: Creation and foundation of the International Renewable Energy Agency– IRENA. On January 26, the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was held in Bonn, Germany. Representatives of 125 countries attended, and about 50 have already signed the founding statute of the agency. IRENA's main objective is to promote renewable energies for their adoption by all countries in the world, promoting the sustainable use of them. It also stands as a reference center of renewable energy technology and provides support in all matters concerning this issue. ARGENTINA: IMPSA obtained funding for a new wind power supplies factory in Brazil. On January 22, the subsidiary of IMPSA, Wind Power Energía, received a funding from the National Bank for Social Development (BNDES) to establish a factory that will provide design, technology and equipment of high value for wind power generation. The credit extended by the financial institution amounts US $13 million, with a loan period that will extend over 10 years at an annual rate of 9%. ECUADOR: International bidding process for wind energy project Santa Cruz/Baltra. Fideicomiso Mercantil de Energía Renovable para Galápagos (Trust fund for Renewable Energy for the Galápagos Islands) – announces International Bidding Process for: Supply and Installation Wind Energy Project Santa Cruz/Baltra Phase 1 with Option for Phase 2. This project consists of three phases, the first two of which are scheduled to come on-line between 2010 and 2012. During the first phase, the wind turbines (up to 3 MW) will operate in standard grid-parallel operation, while the second phase (another 4 MW) will be a high-penetration or wind/diesel system with more than 50 % wind energy penetration. A possible third phase with up to 20 MW of wind turbine equipment will be introduced within the current government programme “Cero Combustibiles Fósiles en Galápagos” (100 % Renewable Energy Islands of Galápagos). CHILE: German company invests in several wind power projects. Eolic Partners Chile have recently informed that they plan to invest around $300 million dollars to begin working on 2 wind farms in the Region IV; these farms would introduce a total of 148 MW to the Central Interconnected System. The CEO of the company said that “La Gorgona” and “El Pacifico” wind farms, of 76 MW and 72 MW respectively, were introduced to the Environmental Impact Evaluation System, and they are waiting for the final approval to begin working. MEMBER'S PRESS RELEASE 3TIER releases new FIRSTLOOK prospecting tool. 3TIER announced the expansion of its FirstLook Prospecting tool, now providing free access to average wind speed ranges anywhere in the world, through a 5 kilometer resolution map. FirstLook is Web-based assessment tool to globally prospect for viable wind energy generation locations. “The map’s underlying dataset provides the information developers, financiers and governments need to target the best regions in the world for data collection and higher resolution studies,” said Ken Westrick, CEO of 3TIER.
