NICARAGUA: Master of Energy for Sustainable Development.

Master of Energy for Sustainable Development

The Foundation UPC from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia through the UNESCO Chair in Sustainability organized and structured studies for the Masters with a group of academics from both Spain and Latin America, who put together the contents, coordinated and conducted classes in three universities simultaneously: the Faculty of Esteli Multidisciplinary Regional of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (FAREM UNAN-Managua), the National University of Asuncion in conjunction with the Catholic University "Our Lady of the Rosary" from Paraguay, and Polytechnic University of Catalunya with its headquarters in Terrassa.

The studies were conducted as a semi presential. The Master courses began in February 2007 and ended in December 2007. Classes are conducted through the platform Agora of the UPC and it Pupils have all the academic information and software tools for studying, and always guided by a virtual tutor. At Headquarters with a reference guide for the various modules of the Masters studies.

This is the first Masters in Renewable Energy taking place in Nicaragua, and was teaching professionals from universities, the business sector and the Ministry of Energy, together with the vast experience and leadership of FAREM in the management of graduate studies with foreign institutions.

In Nicaragua, FAREM Estelí had an enrolment of 14 students effectively in this Masters. The students during classes had the opportunity to study and conduct visits to companies and sites where renewable energy technologies are applied at different scales contributing to the generation of energy in Nicaragua.

The energy context, the historical and present, of Nicaragua proves to be a very important and interesting for learning and discussion on the planning of its energy development both locally and nationally for students. This allows live directly a number of approaches and changes in the country's energy policy.

The group of Estelí had an outstanding performance between the three venues for the Masters. The students presented 5 thesis projects so successful on 02 February 2008. The topics covered ranged from applications solar thermal, biomass, photovoltaic and energy efficiency. All focused on proposals for solutions to energy problems of various private enterprises, communities and the same University FAREM UNAN-Managua.

For this year 2008, opens the SECOND EDITION of this Masters, and Estelí pretend to maintain their levels of participation and emphasized in the training of new professionals specializing in renewable energy and energy efficiency with an emphasis on Sustainable Development.
