NEWS COSTA RICA: Launching of tender for EVCSA wind farm already has bidders. In recent days, Eólico Valle Central (EVCSA) launched the tender for installing a wind farm of 15.3 MW, which will cost up to $38.3 million US dollars, and will be located in the province of Santa Ana, about 15 kilometers from the national capital. The wind farm will have 18 turbines, which will supply electricity to approximately 30 thousand people. CUBA: The Gibara II wind farm receives equipment for its construction. The construction of the Gibara II wind farm, in the province of Holguín, will be finished and operating shortly since the Chinese equipment for its construction has already arrived. The wind farm will have an installed capacity of 4.5 MW, produced by 6 units of 750 volts. Currently, prior studies have already been performed. PERU: MINAM announces diversification of its energy matrix for the coming years. Recently, the Deputy Minister of Energy Development of the Natural Resources in the country, announced that they plan to diversify its national energy matrix with wind power in about 5 years, since it will represent a 20 percent of the country‘s total supply. She also commented that, currently, they have temporary concessions that reach 500 MW; however, they are in the phase of prefeasibility studies to determine the wind conditions and appropriate areas for locating potential wind farms. PANAMA: German company will invest in a wind farm. The German company Wind 7 AG, through a strategic alliance with the Panamanian company Aerogeneradores Cerro Azul SA (AGCASA), will develop the construction of a wind farm with a total investment of $400 million US dollars, to be funded in 2 years. The so-called Panama-Atlantic Wind Project will be located in the vicinity of Columbus city, near the Panamanian capital, and will have a total installed capacity of 200 MW. However, the president of AGCASA reported that in its first stage, the wind farm will produce 30 MW through 15 wind turbines of 2 MW each, supplying an average of 10,000 households in the city. NICARAGUA: The first 4 MW of wind energy have been installed in the country. As a successful outcome of the recently inaugurated Amayo Wind Farm, located in the province of Rivas, near the national capital, 4 MW of wind energy have been installed and connected to the national electric system for the first time in the country’s history. This small initial contribution is part of a total of 40 MW, expected to be incorporated when the wind farm is fully operating with 19 wind turbines of 2.1 MW each, through a total investment of $90 million US dollars. CHILE: CODELCO, a national mining company, will invest in a wind farm. In its commitment to incorporate the use of renewable and clean energy, the state company Corporacion Nacional del Cobre (CODELCO) will conduct an initial investment of at least $ 45 million US dollars to build a wind energy farm near Mina Gabriela Mistral, in the northern region of Antofagasta. The project contemplates a 20 – 40 MW wind farm, with 20 turbines of 2 MW each. However, they informed that the investment could double up to $ 90 million if they decide to build a bigger wind farm. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Starting a landmark case about commercialization of wind power produced in the country, through 2 new wind farms. On February 17, the President of the Dominican Republic along with executives of the company Inveravante Dominicana made the opening for the construction of two wind farms by a historic act, since the launch of both farms is the beginning of a political commitment to diversifying the country's energy matrix and marketing of wind energy. The construction of the two projects will represent a total investment of 136 million, and together will provide about 100 MW to the national electrical system. The first one is the Matafongo wind farm, located in the southern province of Peravia with 54 wind turbines. The other one is The Granadillo wind farm, located in the province of Montecristi, in the north. Each one will generate 50 MW; their construction and launching is planned for later this year. MEXICO: Two municipalities in the state of Baja California will have their lighting supplied by wind power. The state government of Baja California reported on the award for the construction of a wind farm, located in La Rumorosa. Turbo Power Services is the company who won the approval of the proposal submitted in the tender. This wind farm will generate 10 MW in its first stage of operation, produced by 5 GAMESA wind turbines, model G87. The investment proposal of Turbo Power Services amounts up to $ 26 million US dollars.
