CHILE: CODELCO, a national mining company, will invest in a wind farm.

In its commitment to incorporate the use of renewable and clean energy, the state company Corporacion Nacional del Cobre (CODELCO) will conduct an initial investment of at least $ 45 million US dollars to build a wind energy farm near Mina Gabriela Mistral, in the northern region of Antofagasta.

The project contemplates a 20 – 40 MW wind farm, with 20 turbines of 2 MW each. However, they informed that the investment could double up to $ 90 million if they decide to build a bigger wind farm.

Also, the construction and operation of the farm is subject to the launch of an international tender, scheduled for late March this year.

Authorities of the copper company have showed themselves optimistic towards the characteristics of the project, since the energy produced by the farm will be connected to the electrical substation of the company, which will be directly reflected in reduced costs and works associated with construction of power transmission lines.

It should be noted that this wind farm will allow the company to diversify its energy matrix, as well as generate 30 direct jobs for its construction and operation in one year.
