CHILE: The Wind sector in the IV region promises investments for US $430 millions.

The starting in last December of the wind farm "Canela" (IV Region, 18.15 MW, US $35 millions) by Endesa could become in the beginning of a series of investments in the area looking for add new generation based on this type of Non Conventional Renewable Energy Sources.

The geographical characteristics of the region have taken that other companies are processing wind projects in the area, which will require investments near to the US $430 millions, those that could become 214 MW of capacity installed for the Central Interconnected System.

NICARAGUA: US$80 millions for Renewable Energy generation.

Nicaragua obtains 80.2 million dollars to finance state and private projects of renewable energy, what comes to boost the plan settled down by the Nicaraguan Institute of Energy and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of having for the 2012, the 60 percent of the electric generation matrix operating without fossil fuels.

The 80.2 million dollars are distributed in two payments, of 40.2 and 40 millions, contributed by the Inter-American Bank of Development and the Central American Bank for Economical Integration, respectively.

BRAZIL – ARGENTINA: Pescarmona installs a wind turbines manufacturer in Brazil.

Impsa, property of Enrique Menotti Pescarmona, is building a factory of wind turbines in the state of Pernambuco, in the north of Brazil, with financing of the National Bank of Development for near US $100 millions. There will be a plant with capacity to manufacture 200 equipments of wind generation per year. The factory will begin to work on May to supply the local and regional market.

CUBA: Holguin will increase Wind generation with the Wind Farm Gibara II.

The building of a second wind farm in the region of Gibara, to the east of the island, will begin soon in the area of “Punta Rasa”, with capacity for 4,5 MW.

The farm, denominated Gibara II, will enter in moments in that the price of the petroleum is around 100 dollars for barrel. Héctor Lugo, chief of wind sector in the Electric Company Holguín, informed that the new farm will be of Chinese technology and it will have six machines of 750 kW.

BRAZIL: Subsidiary of EDP creates a unit of renewable energy for Latin America

Lisbon. The company “Energias do Brasil”, subsidiary of Energy of Portugal (EDP), will create the society Enernova, a new business unit that will gather the interests in renewable energy of the group in Latin America.

EDP explained in an official statement that this new company will have as objective to achieve a capacity of production of 1.000 megawatts before 2012.

In the wind energy sector, Enernova will enjoy a narrow collaboration with “EDP Renovables”, the fourth world producer of wind energy.

ARGENTINA: LA PROVINCIA with NRG PATAGONIA S.A. and IMPSA. They sign agreements of development of wind energy generation.

In the central act for the 107 years of “Comodoro”, the intendant Martín Buzzi accompanied the governor Mario Das Neves in the signature of two agreements with NRG Patagonia S.A. and IMPSA for the wind turbines acquisition framed in the program “Vientos de la Patagonia I” (Patagonian Winds I) with a total investment of 4 million dollars.

"In the area of the Tordillo it will be the first of a series of farms that we will start in the rest of the province to generate an important development of the wind energy in the region", the provincial minister highlighted.

URUGUAY: The construction of a wind farm is being prepared.

By the middle of next year, it will begin the work of the wind farm “Arbolito” department of “Cerro Largo”, on the hill that gives name to this area and 23 kilometers of Melo for route 8 to Montevideo. The Work has an investment of 100 million dollars.

About 750 work positions would generate the setting up of the wind farm of “Arbolito” that will have 59 wind turbines.

MEXICO: Wind Energy would generate 25% of the electric supply.

Apart of the fact of the approbation or not of the energetic reform, the federal Government maintains his purpose of strengthening the energy generation through renewable mechanisms, for what is expected that at the end of the present government (six years) at least a fourth part of the electric offer is supplied by means of wind energy.

In that sense, the head of the Secretary of Energy, Georgina Kessel, referred the projects of this nature established in areas like the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, with the purpose of reducing the dependence to energy generation through non renewable resources, as the case of the petroleum.

ECUADOR: Galapagos uses the wind’s blow to generate electricity

The wind generation helps to cover until 50% of the demand of San Cristobal's 7 000 habitants. The emission of annual 3 000 tons of C02 will be avoided.

As three guardians, the wind turbines seems as they are keeping the peace of the island San Cristobal, in Galapagos, from the high of the hill "El Tropezon”. Although their metallic structure and color break up with the natural environment, their single presence attracts the attention.

The best winds (of up to 30 m/s) in the area of “El Tropezon”, to the east of the island, blows from May to December. That allows to take advantage of all the installed capacity of 2 400 kilowatts (kW) with the three turbines.

PANAMÁ: Germans will invest $400 millions in wind farm.

The German company Wind 7 AG will develop a wind farm of 200 MW in the proximities of Colon city, by means of an investment of 400 million dollars in next two years.

The German company has settled a strategic alliance with the Panamanian company Aerogeneradores Cerro Azul S.A., of which acquired 90% of the stock capital.

On March 27th LAWEA will elect its first board of directors

We have already received the first postulations to conform the first board of directors of LAWEA starting from the next March 27th. Very soon we will inform who will be those that empower the wind energy in Latin America.

The elected directors will have the responsibility of being the visible face of the association to the society and the leaders of the industry in the region. They will be the representation of the organization and will be in charge of formulating strategies regarding the fulfillment of our mission and to promote the development of Wind Energy in Latin America.
