NEWS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Spanish company will invest in five wind farms. The Spanish company Element Power will invest, alongside investors in the Caribbean country, approximately 400 million euros in the construction of five wind farms. This was reported in a recent press conference, by the president of the National Energy Commission (CNE) and the CEO of that company. The wind farms will be located in two regions of the country, and together will produce a total of 250 MW. MEXICO: Wind farm awarded to Iberdrola Renovables. The CFE has awarded the contract for the construction of La Venta III wind farm to the Spanish company Iberdrola Renovables. The wind farm will be located in Santo Domingo de Ingenio, State of Oaxaca. It will have an installed capacity of 103 MW, produced by 121 turbines, with 850 KW of power each, model G52. These turbines will be acquired from Gamesa, a Spanish capital firm. URUGUAY: Project to expand the wind farm in Sierra de los Caracoles. The wind farm located in Sierra de los Caracoles, Maldonado, could double its capacity of wind power generation. This is due to the efforts undertaken by UTE (National Administration of Power Plants and Electric Transmission) alongside private equity firms, mainly Spanish companies. The farm currently has a capacity of 10 MW, through 5 turbines of 2 MW each. The plan of the UTE is to reach 20 MW, and thus continue with the rectification of the agreement reached with Spanish companies, which established a debt forgiveness between Uruguay and Spain if the Latin American country purchased the equipment from the Spanish country. BRAZIL: Brazilian company will install seven new wind farms in the southwestern region. The company Renova Energy obtained the final authorization by the State Environment Council (CEPRAM) to invest around 437 million dollars in the building of seven wind farms in the southwestern region of the state of Bahia. The company's goal is to produce a total of 177 MW through 7 wind farms. They will be located in the municipalities of Caetité, with 40 wind turbines installed, and Igaporã with 78 turbines. Furthermore, executives of Renova Energy expect that the Federal Government buys their production through its regular auctions for purchasing electricity from various sources. NICARAGUA: New MW incorporated to the National Interconnected System. Continuing with the information shared in our previous newsletter about the historic and successful result of the Amayo wind farm, incorporating its first 4 MW to the national electricity system, it has now been moved forward a few steps further. It has reached an addition of 20.8 MW, which means they have already obtained 50% out of the total planned generation capacity. Therefore, and based on these successful results, they expect to complete the 40 MW threshold for the first stage of operation soon. REGIONAL/MEXICO: LAWEA announced its first Workshop in a press conference in Oaxaca. On March 10th, the Executive Director of LAWEA gave a press conference in the capital of Oaxaca, along with the Director of Renewable Energy and Strategic Projects of the Oaxaca State Secretary of Economy, and the Sub-Secretary of Tourism Promotion and Advertising. The reason for the conference was the dissemination and promotion, with full support from the authorities of the State of Oaxaca, of the first Technical Workshop to be held in Bays of Huatulco, on March 26 and 27 at the Barceló Hotel, speaking about “Development, implementation and operation of wind farms in Latin America”. BRAZIL: ENDESA showed strong intentions to invest in Rio Grande do Norte. The Spanish company Endesa is evaluating the possibility to invest around $ 270 million US dollars to generate wind power in Rio Grande do Norte, entering as a partner in projects that are already operating. However, sources indicated that the company is interested in developing its own projects during the next five years. The objective would be to hold a portfolio of up to a thousand MW, mainly in the regions of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará. CHILE: New wind farm financed by a Spanish company. The Chilean company Renova Energy, with majority shares owned by Spanish capital, has submitted to the National Environmental Commission (CONAMA), a project to build a wind farm in Region V, through an investment of $ 32 million US dollars. It is the “Las Dichas” wind farm, in Casablanca, which will have an installed capacity of 16 MW through 8 turbines with a generating capacity of 2 MW each. To this end, it is estimated that the works will start in late 2011. CENTRAL AMERICA: The EEP continues to support renewable energy projects for rural areas. The Energy and Environment Partnership with Central America (EEP), established by the World Summit on Sustainable Development of the United Nations in Johannesburg in 2002, still backs the development and promotion of renewable energy in Central America, in the sustainable development and climate change mitigation. Thus, the EEP, with funds provided by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) and other cooperating agencies, will soon approve approximately 68 new renewable energy projects in isolated rural areas, which have shortages of electricity in their communities. PANAMA: Spanish company will invest in a wind farm. The Spanish company Fersa, through the Panamanian company Enrilews SA, will invest approximately $225 million Euros in building the Toabré wind farm, to be located in the province of Cocle. In the Environmental License, finally issued by the Authority of Public Services (ASEP), they authorize the generation of 225 MW when it begins to operate in its entirety, which will cover 9% of domestic demand. MEMBERS' PRESS RELEASE NRG Systems and Leosphere announce global partnership taking wind measurement to new heights. March 17, 2009. Marseille, France – NRG Systems, leading manufacturer of wind measurement equipment, and Leosphere, leading specialist in lidar (laser radar) for atmospheric observations, today announced the formation of a global joint venture to expand the use of remote sensing with lidar in the wind energy industry. The first product of the partnership is the WINDCUBE™ lidar wind measurement system, a remote sensor used in site assessment and wind farm performance monitoring. Meteosim Truewind presents a new historical database aimed towards achieving a more accurate prediction of wind resource. Barcelona, 16th march 2009.- Meteosim TrueWind- company specialised in meteorological consultancy and located in Barcelona’s Science Park- has developed a database whose spatial and temporal resolution are remarkably higher than those used nowadays in this field. This tool, called windTrends, is already being commercialized...
