MEXICO: Turbopower Services begins construction of “La Rumorosa I” wind farm.

The Mexican company Turbopower Services, in partnership with the American firm D'Quadrant Strategies, has officially started the construction of “La Rumorosa I” wind farm, located in Tecate, Baja California.

“La Rumorosa I” project of will have an installed capacity of 10MW on its first stage, produced by five 2MW turbines that will be installed between next August and September. The supplier of the turbines will be the company GAMESA, which will also provide maintenance services for one year. The second stage of the project seeks to complete a 100MW wind farm.

BRAZIL: BNDES signs a loan agreement for wind projects with the German Development Bank.

After almost 10 years since the last agreement, the National Bank of Economic and Social Development of Brazil (BNDES) and the German Development Bank (KfW Entwiklungsbank) signed a loan agreement to fund projects that provide wind power generation from Brazilian private companies, in the amount of approximately US $135.6 million dollars.

This new agreement is the eleventh (11th) that these two banks take forward, since they began relations in the early 60's, but had been frozen since 2000, after signing an agreement for US $150 million.

ARGENTINA: First wind turbine installed for agricultural irrigation in the province of Neuquén.

The operation of this wind turbine is expected to benefit a community of 50 farmers, located in Valle de Michacheo, Zapala.

The execution of this project, which is already in operation, is part of a successful joint effort between the Zapala Electricity Cooperative (Neuquén Province), the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI), the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the State Company of the Province of Río Negro, INVAP.

EL SALVADOR: Municipalities might benefit from the development of wind projects.

The Lempa River Hydroelectric Executive Commission (CEL) presented a project to carry out a feasibility study in order to determine the concrete possibilities of installing two wind farms in this country.

The cost for the execution of this project amounts US $397.449, fund donated by the Spanish government through the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

CHILE: Canela I wind farm enters in the UN’s “Clean Development Mechanism” circuit.

Endesa Eco, a company managed by Endesa Chile, announced that they have successfully introduced the Canela I wind farm into the Clean Development Mechanism circuit, in front of the United Nations Climate Change Office.

For Endesa Chile, this wind farm stands as the first of their projects to reach this achievement in the country, and at the same time the third one in the region, after a mini-hydro plant also in Chile, and a hydropower central in Peru.

PERU: The COES will carry out a study to use wind energy for electricity supplying.

By late July this year, the Committee of Economic Operation of the National Interconnected System (COES) will present a study to determine the maximum capacity of wind power to be installed in certain areas of the National Interconnected System (SIN) of Peru. This study has been commissioned to the COES by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), which in turn must work to recruit international consulters to carry out the technical study.

The study should include the connection of wind power depending on the conditions of stability and system reserve; they need to set the number of wind projects that can be incorporated in some areas of Peru’s SIN.

BRAZIL: Actions to strengthen ties with Spain.

Recently, the Minister of Energy and Mines of Brazil, together with a large delegation of officials from the Brazilian government as well as with business leaders in the wind energy sector, has had an intense and prolific tour in the Iberian country.

This activity is a consequence of a program designed and held jointly by the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE) and the Brazilian Wind Energy Association. The reason that has prompted this visit was to reinforce and strengthen ties of cooperation, partnership and investment in the wind energy sector specifically.

CHILE: CODELCO exceeds expectations for participation in the launch of its international bid.

The Chilean state-owned company has surpassed expectations in terms of expressions of interest and participation by both national and international companies in the wind power sector, in his first call for the international bid for the Mining Company Gaby SA.

This is a bid that seeks to build and operate a wind energy project inside the Gaby mine, located at the north of Chile. This project is expected to generate between 20 to 40 MW of wind power by up to 20 wind turbines of 2 MW each.

LAWEA is pleased to report, with great honor, that the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) has officially extended the record indicating that this association is now included in the National Register of Institutions and Scientific and Technological Enterprises (RENIECYT) since early of April this year.

This has been possible due to the continuous and permanent contribution of LAWEA for the development of wind energy both nationally and in Latin America.

We are very pleased to share this with our members and the whole community, since this achievement was made possible thanks to the support provided to LAWEA throughout this time, and has allowed to consolidate an increasingly strong and committed way to have a cleaner world for the global community.
