ARGENTINA: A wind farm will be developed in a Patagonian municipality.

At first, they will install a 500 KW wind turbine that will generate energy from the first moment of its installation. The initial investment to carry on the installation of this first wind turbine, which will also allow determining the wind resource potential of the site, is Arg.$ 2 million (approximately U$S 600 thousand).

Once the viability of the project is confirmed, they plan to install a wind farm with three 2MW wind turbines. They expect the lifespan of the wind farm to reach 25 years.

BRAZIL: The registration process of companies interested in the wind energy auction has begun.

The “Empresa de Pesquisa Energética” (EPE) reported that the registration process of companies interested in the wind power first auction, to be held in November this year, has begun.

An interesting point to note is that you can access the application through the following website: http://sistemas.epe.gov.br/AEGE/adesao. The deadline for registering is May 29.

MEXICO: Investment of U$S300 million for wind power generation.

In the State of Tamaulipas, a wind power project was approved to supply and deliver electricity to around 43 municipalities. The goal: to reduce expenditure on electricity consumption.

The investment for this project, which amounts to about U$S300 million, provides for the installation of a generating plant in Los Vergeles, San Fernando; and, is also expected to join this statewide initiative to the municipality of Reynosa.

ARGENTINA: the province of Chubut will have the first wind turbines manufactured nationally.

These are two prototype wind turbines of 1.5 MW, developed and manufactured in parallel in the province of Chubut, by the companies IMPSA (Pescarmona group) and NRG Patagonia.

“Vientos de Patagonia” wind farm, jointly possessed by the firms IMPSA and NRG Patagonia, provides a generating capacity of 60 MW of power through 40 wind turbines of 1.5 MW each. The investment amounts to U$S 120 million.

CHILE: The German company SoWiTec will develop a wind farm in the Region II.

At Southeast of Calama, in region II, the German firm SoWiTec will carry on the construction of the “Valle de los Vientos” wind farm, through an investment of U$S 200 million.

The plan is to install 33 wind turbines of 3MW each, reaching a total power of 99MW. These will be connected to the Interconnected System of Norte Grande, which supplies electricity to towns and mining stocks of the regions I, II, and XV.

MEXICO: Baja California bets strongly for wind projects.

The Government of the State of Baja California is very encouraging and in line with the results that are being obtained of promoting wind energy projects that are being developed in the territory.

First, with the construction of La Rumorosa I wind farm, they expect to open the scenario to more and new investments as well as generating new jobs. It should be remembered that this farm, which will be located on a 42 hectares of municipal land, will have a total generating capacity of 10 MW at an early stage, with five wind turbines of 2 MW each, equipment provided by the Spanish company Gamesa.

REGIONAL: V SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS, Port Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

During April 17-19 of this year, the V Summit of the Americas was held in Port Spain, the capital of the Caribbean country Trinidad and Tobago. It had a wide presence of presidents, chancellors, and ministers of all American countries.

Throughout these three days, the meeting was strengthened by the positive tendency of presidents to treat the issue of energy cooperation seriously and highly-committed among Latin American countries and United States.

REGIONAL: International Financial Institutions launch a call for an Energy Innovation Contest.

It is a joint initiative between the Inter American Development Bank (IADB), GVEP International (GI), German Technical Cooperation for Development (GTZ) and the Korean Government, which sought projects that promote better energy efficiency and access to renewable energy for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

This Energy Innovation Contest aims to develop solutions to energy shortages in the region, especially in rural and low income communities. The total amount allocated by donors amounted to U$S 4 million for this first call, and can grow for the next three years up to U$S 6 million. It considers giving up to U$S 200 thousand for the projects that are selected.

LAWEA will carry out the Forum: "Elements for Wind Power Development in Colombia"

The Latin American Wind Energy Association LAWEA, is pleased to announce the public forum entitled “Elements for Wind Power Development in Colombia”, which will take place in Medellin, Colombia, on July 07, 2009.

LAWEA is organizing this forum with the intention to explore the opportunities and barriers that wind power represents in the country, laying the groundwork for further discussion, analysis and support to its development, examining the development potential of this non-conventional renewable energy, assess the possibilities of technology generation in the country and assess the impact of including wind energy as a contribution to the country's energy matrix, among others.

Among the participants of the event are: Power generating companies, parliamentarians, congressmen and legislators, government agencies, research centers, universities, consulting firms, input manufacturers or service suppliers of the sector, banks, investors, industrials, as well as environmental and renewable energy organizations, etc.

LAWEA will participate in WIND POWER 2009

WIND POWER 2009 Conference and Exhibition, organized by the American Wind Energy Association AWEA, is the largest wind power event worldwide. It will count with more than 13,000 attendees and more than 1,000 exhibitors.
