MEXICO: Iberdrola will create a Networks and Substations Engineering Center.

This Networks and Substations Engineering Center has as main objective the development of technology to generate wind power in Mexico, and thus harness the huge potential of this resource in the country.

For its part, and closely in line with the discussion at this meeting, the Secretary of Energy of the country highlighted the great potential of the wind power sector, adding that by the end of 2012 the goal is to have an installed capacity equivalent to 2,500 MW in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

BRAZIL: The Spanish firm Endesa increasingly committed to having a position in the Brazilian wind energy sector.

The subsidiary of the Spanish company Endesa, Endesa Brazil, expressed during the “Renewable Energy Finance Forum” that was held recently in Rio de Janeiro, their interest to participate more actively in the wind energy sector of the local market.

Although they have not yet clarified whether the firm will participate in the auction for wind energy to be held in late November this year, they expressed the importance they attach to the huge Brazil wind potential, currently estimated at 143 GW that could be extended to 300 GW by 2025, as reported by the Brazilian Wind Energy Association.

MEXICO: Spanish company interested in developing a wind energy project.

The company “Energías Alternas de México”, subsidiary of a Spanish firm, has already initiated actions to determine the wind potential and thus develop a wind power generation project in the region of Juarez.

First, they determined to install a measurement tower to assess the strength of the wind, and if their results are positive, they would be installing in a first stage, a wind farm with 50 turbines.

PANAMA: Digicel Panama will invest in technology based on wind energy.

The telecommunications company Digicel, through its Panama subsidiary, has recently made a strategic alliance with the Asian company BWE Power to operate a cellular base station using wind power.

This initiative includes the installation of a 10 KW wind generator, which will be placed on the telecommunications tower located in the community of “El Porvenir”, Kuna Yala.

CHILE/ARGENTINA: Signed an agreement for wind power generation.

This is the first bi-national agreement between Chile and Argentina that includes the installation of a wind farm that will supply energy in the project "Pascua Lama" (Pascua by the Chilean side, and Lama by the Argentinean side) of mine exploitation.

The farm will be located in the community La Higuera, IV Region of Chile, and will have 20 wind turbines, through an investment of U$S 100 million.

BRAZIL: EDP Renováveis plans to enter the wind energy auction to be held in the second half of this year.

As is well known, the government of Brazil has already set the date for holding the first wind power auction in the history of the country: November 25.

For this reason, the subsidiary EDP Renováveis Brazil, which is already developing major wind energy projects in several states, and for long-term position in the sector, informed of its intentions to participate in the expected auction.

CHILE: ENEL Green Power has signed an agreement to develop several wind energy projects.

The Italian firm ENEL G.P., through its Chilean subsidiary ENEL Latin America Limited, signed a "beneficial" agreement with the Chilean subsidiary SoWiTec Renewable Energy (belonging to the German SoWiTec International GmBH) to construct several wind farms for a total capacity of 850 MW.

At first, they plan to install seven wind farms, each with a capacity of between 60 and 150 MW.

URUGUAY: the first meeting of wind energy players was held in Uruguay, under the name "Opportunities under development".

The meeting was held on Tuesday, April 21, organized jointly by the Wind Energy Program of the National Direction of Energy and Nuclear Technology (DNETN) and the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay (CIU).

It featured presentations by the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Daniel Martínez, Director of Energy, Ramón Méndez and the Director of Industries, Roberto Kreimerman. For the private sector, the presentations were related to regional wind developments.

LAWEA will carry out the Forum: "Elements for Wind Power Development in Colombia"

The Latin American Wind Energy Association LAWEA, is pleased to announce the public forum entitled “Elements for Wind Power Development in Colombia”, which will take place in Medellin, Colombia, on July 07, 2009.

LAWEA is organizing this forum with the intention to explore the opportunities and barriers that wind power represents in the country, laying the groundwork for further discussion, analysis and support to its development, examining the development potential of this non-conventional renewable energy, assess the possibilities of technology generation in the country and assess the impact of including wind energy as a contribution to the country's energy matrix, among others.

Among the participants of the event are: Power generating companies, parliamentarians, congressmen and legislators, government agencies, research centers, universities, consulting firms, input manufacturers or service suppliers of the sector, banks, investors, industrials, as well as environmental and renewable energy organizations, etc.

LAWEA was present at WIND POWER 2009

WIND POWER 2009 Conference and Exhibition, organized by the American Wind Energy Association AWEA, is the largest wind power event worldwide. It counted with more than 13,000 attendees and more than 1,000 exhibitors.

The event took place in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in May 4 – 7, 2009. It gathered wind energy professionals aiming to share knowledge, new products and technologies linked to this kind of energy.

LAWEA participated as exhibitor in the event, with the objective of promoting the development of wind energy in Latin America, as well as establishing new important contacts to support the creating of new strategies and projects that enable the growth of wind power in our region.
