Renewable Energies in Indigenous Communities.
On the past May 9th, under the framework of the First International Congress on Bio-fuels, the Rural Electrification Program for Indigenous Communities with Renewable Energies was signed with a purpose of providing electricity to indigenous communities throughout Mexico. This event took place in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco in Mexico.
This program benefited the 30 entities that form the Mexican federation and highlighting the state of Veracruz as it will allow providing power to 50 thousand households, which is equivalent to the benefit of over 250 thousand inhabitants.
This program is supported by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and the World Bank, agencies that will provide a total of $ 30 million dollars, and simultaneously 30 states and the benefited municipalities will provide $ 60 million, who together will receive 10 million extra from other organizations to generate a total of $ 100 million.
An important point is that this agreement will gradually attract additional both public and private contributions, in order to increase the number of benefited communities and individuals and thus accomplish the primary objective of the project.
Among the actions considered for this program are:
- The solar photovoltaic systems with individual and / or centralized systems
- Wind energy, with individual systems and / or centralized
- Hybrid power systems.
For the execution of this program, about 5 years are estimated, starting from the concrete implementation of this plan.
