BRAZIL: BNDES approved financing for a wind farm.

Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES) recently adopted R$72 million (about U$S36 million) funding to develop and construct the wind farm Pedra do Sal, to be located in the municipality of Parnaiba (in Piauí).

The project, which already has the installation and operation permits issued by the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Resources (SEMAR), will have an installed capacity of 18 MW. In addition, a contract was signed with the company Eletrobrás, for the purchase and sale of energy produced for a period of 20 years.

BNDES, will pay nearly 70% of the total investment, while the remaining 30% will be implemented by the Specific Purpose Company (SPE), controlled by the energy company Tractebel SA, so in the context of PROINFA, this project seeks to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases at the same time it aims to diversify the Brazilian energy matrix.
