PERU: 7 concessions were granted for research in wind farms

On the past May 23rd, the Energy and Mines Minister (MEM) of Peru granted to “Iberoperuana Investments”, 7 temporal concessions for researches to prove the feasibility of generating power with wind farms in the country.

Being Spain the world leader on the development of wind power, is the main reason why Spanish companies related to this production are interested in investing in projects of this kind. This is the main reason why Peru has asked the Spanish company for his wind map, which is pretended to be finished in less than six months and whose results will be used so the big investors have the knowledge of the available wind power potential, and of the most appropriate zones for the construction and operation of wind farms and turbines.

HONDURAS: The construction of a wind farm with an investment of 130 million dollars has been proposed.

The company Mesoamerica Energy will propose the National Electricity Company (ENEE), the construction of a wind farm with an estimated value of 130 million dollars, and with a capacity to generate 60 megawatts. This is because there already some similar projects, which are operated by Mesoamerica Energy in Costa Rica, and another one that is in construction process in Nicaragua.

The wind project Honduras 2000 is located in the Hula Mountain, Santa Ana, Francisco Morazán, and will have the capacity to almost generate the power of one of the four turbines of El Cajón.

VENEZUELA: European companies will be able to invest in Venezuela

On the past May 13, in the city of Lisboa, was released to the media that the companies Energias de Portugal (EDP) and Galp are interested in being part of the construction of wind farms in Venezuela, where this market is not fully used.

These companies arrived at the Latin-American country with the Portuguese State Chief, with the intention to negotiate, with companies and authorities of Venezuela, the possible installation of wind farms.

MEXICO: It is necessary to use renewable energy: Molina

During the forum “Climate Change”, in the state of Tabasco, on the past May 22nd, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2005, Mario Molina, made a careful invitation to use and promote manufacturing plants to produce renewable energies, mainly wind and heat.

Molina called to invest “much more” in new technologies, even though they are currently more expensive, and in big energy projects other than fossil fuels.

COLOMBIA: President convenes to accelerate the development of biofuels and alternative energies

On the past May 23rd, in Brazil, the Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe, acknowledged that Colombia needs to accelerate the development of the biofuels industry, and at the same time continue in the productions of alternative energies as an option, due to the possible Oil shortages and high prices of crude oil in the international market.

“We need to develop the biofuels a lot, accelerate that development. We need to accelerate the wind power, the energy generated by La Brisa in La Guajira”, said the representative in Brasilia, where the Summit of the South American Union of Nations (Unasur) was carried out.

PANAMA: A German company will develop 2 wind farms

The German company WIND 7AG has planned to develop 2 wind farms in Panama. One of them would be installed in Colón, and the other one in Bocas del Toro; this was announced on May 25th, due to the strategic alliance that the company has with the Panamanian company Wind Turbines Cerro Azul SA

These projects have contemplated to produce an installed capacity of 200 megawatts, the one in Colón, and 350 megawatts the one in Bocas del Toro, explained the engineer Antonio Clément, its impeller.

HONDURAS: The price of Wind Energy causes argument between the Government and entrepreneurs

During the last days, the National Wind Energy Company (ENEE) and the Wind Energy Company of Honduras (EEHSA) had cause a huge argument due to the real price of the production of wind power in this country, since it is assured to be working primacy to a higher price for thermal energy than that generated by wind.

The private sector asserts that the price (KW/h) of wind power is 40% lower than what the government says; “although the incentive has positive points, the problem is the marginal cost of short-term," added the businessman of Mesoamerica Energy.

CHILE: Chilean company willing to invest in new wind farm

Recently, the Chilean company Andes Energy announced the proposed creation of a wind farm that would generate 40 MW and would have an investment of 80 million dollars in the region of Curaumilla, which should begin operations in the second half of the next year.

Andes Energy consists of: Jose Ingnacio Escobar, Juan Ignacio Walter, Manuel Aravena, and Francisco Vera, whose long-term objective is to operate at least 300 MW. The entrepreneurs hope that this wind project in Curuamilla will be the most important in the central zone.

MEXICO: Korean Entrepreneurs interested in investing in plants for wind towers

On the past May 27, the secretary of Economic Development of Mexico reported that a group of Korean businessmen are interested in investing in a plant to produce towers for wind power generation; several Mexican entities are being analyzed, but it will be most likely installed in the state of Nuevo Leon.

The secretary assured the investment of these Korean entrepreneurs, but the final decision of where the project will be placed will be announced in the next days.

On last June 1 – 4 was held at Houston, USA, WINDPOWER 2008, one of the biggest and most important Wind Power Conference & Exhibition.

LAWEA participated as exhibitor in the stand 3040 and as speaker at this event, looking forward to present the opportunities and the Latin American Wind Power market updates.

LAWEA participated in the Wind Power Industrial Exhibition, in Caracas, Venezuela.

As part of the Industrial Exhibition on Wind Energy organized by the Centre for Renewable Energy Studies, Institute of Energy, Simon Bolivar University; LAWEA was part of the conferences and participated in this important Wind show in Venezuela. This was also an official presentation act of LAWEA in this country.
