The construction of a wind farm with an investment of 130 million dollars has been proposed.
The company Mesoamerica Energy will propose the Nacional Electricity Company (ENEE), the construction of a wind farm with an estimated value of 130 million dollars, and with a capacity to generate 60 megawatts. This is because there already some similar projects, which are operated by Mesoamerica Energy in Costa Rica, and another one that is in construction process in Nicaragua.
The wind project Honduras 2000 is located in the Hula Mountain, Santa Ana, Francisco Morazán, and will have the capacity to almost generate the power of one of the four turbines of El Cajón.
It was announced that this project already counts with the exploitation permits, and the environmental license, while the lands which with is counted are already assured for its implementation, interconnection studies and the Decree 9-2001, which states as a private pilot project.
For that, the only detail remaining is to translate headings in the contract with the ENEE, and the operation will be started in 2 years. However, for the owners of this initiative, the cost of the project has been directly affected by the oil crisis.
The cost of equipment is increasing at a rate of one million dollars per month, due to the increased demand for wind technology in the international market, since from the beginning, we have faced a cost below the actual price of the same energy.
Moreover, if the project is evaluated and implemented, the result will be that Honduras will be a participant of one of the largest projects, at least in Central America, so the country will depend less on thermal energy, reduce the leakage of foreign exchange caused by the importation of bunker and will have a positive effect on the environment.
