President convenes to accelerate the development of biofuels and alternative energies

On the past May 23rd, in Brazil, the Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe, acknowledged that Colombia needs to accelerate the development of the biofuels industry, and at the same time continue in the productions of alternative energies as an option, due to the possible Oil shortages and high prices of crude oil in the international market.

“We need to develop the biofuels a lot, accelerate that development. We need to accelerate the wind power, the energy generated by La Brisa in La Guajira”, said the representative in Brasilia, where the Summit of the South American Union of Nations (Unasur) was carried out.

He mentioned that contrubuing with the policy of stimulating the use of mass transit and the challenge that Colombia becomes a less fuel consumer country, they will contribute to moderate the effects caused by the increase in international prices of crude oil.

He called to people to take measures of social discipline and fuel saving to weight or minimize the effects that can be generated with an increase in oil prices.

He emphasized and thanked the fact of frequently counting with “the no car day” as a part of his energetic policy. At the same time he insisted in the need to continue expanding the systems of mass transit in Colombia.

However, he warned that this spike in the prices of crude oil forces Colombia not only to look for new energetic sources, but also to make a big effort for finding more oil.
