The price of Wind Energy causes argument between the Government and entrepreneurs
During the last days, the National Wind Energy Company (ENEE) and the Wind Energy Company of Honduras (EEHSA) had cause a huge argument due to the real price of the production of wind power in this country, since it is assured to be working primacy to a higher price for thermal energy than that generated by wind.
This situation caused disagreement in the private sector, since it considers that this situation is not food neither for the energetic sector nor the government; nevertheless, it was mentioned that currently the production of approximately 100 megawatts of clean energy is in the phase of negotiating contracts, basically to the price of KW/hour. “What is happening is that the government wants to pay more for the heat production; at the end, the price is the most important thind and they keep on managing the marginal cost plus 10 percent, but this price is not realistic”, said the executive director of Mesoamérica Energy.
The private sector asserts that the price (KW/h) of wind power is 40% lower than what the government says; “although the incentive has positive points, the problem is the marginal cost of short-term," added the businessman of Mesoamerica Energy.
Although, in the next days, the company EEHSA proposed to manage a more realistic kW/hour price, and the cost will be fairer since there are no charges added, and the prices does not depend on oil. The offer of EEHSA consisted in a price of 0.1075 dollar cents, paid only for the generated energy, without extra charges. Due to the wind is used, a renewable natural resource available in Honduras, free and abundant, the offered price is only indexed to inflation, and is not affecting by the variants of the price of oil or any other fossil fuel.
The authorities of the ENEE, have shown their political willing to allow the development of this project, that they might start constructing in 2009 and begin its operations in 2010 or 2011, if they accomplish the negotiation in the next few months. Therefore, in Honduras, they will have the opportunity to have more clean energy to fight the high prices of oil.
