NICARAGUA: The Nicaraguan company Blue Power & Energy S.A will soon develop a wind project

The Nicaraguan company Blue Power & Energy S.A., who is building a wind energy farm in the southern department of Rivas, has decided to change the location of their wind project due to the sale of the property in which the wind farm was going to be installed.

For this reason, Blue Power & Energy SA, in its goal to go ahead with this project, carried out the necessary formalities for relocation of the provisional license, which was granted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), and also obtained the permit of environmental impact management, awarded by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to the new location known as Saint Martin.

URUGUAY: Official opening of the “Sierra de Caracoles” wind farm.

The “Sierra de Caracoles” wind farm, owned by the UTE (Electric Plants and Transmission National Management), was officially inaugurated with the presence of the country’s president and senior executives of government.

The wind farm, located in the Department of Maldonado, began operations in late 2008 with five wind turbines of 2MW each, which together produce a total installed capacity of 10 MW.

CHILE: Australian Firm seeks to expand its wind projects portfolio.

The Australian firm Pacific Hydro is evaluating the possibility of a major investment in renewable energy projects in the country, with special emphasis on wind energy.

The CEO of the company in Chile revealed that they plan to produce around 300 MW, through an investment that reaches up to U.S. $ S900 million, toward the next 5 years.

SOUTH AMERICA: GAMESA wants to build business opportunities in countries of the region.

The Spanish company Gamesa has recently stated that, in relation to their firm intention to preserve its sales projections for 2009, they do not preclude the possibility of taking advantage of attractive business opportunities in three South American countries including: Argentina, Chile and Venezuela.

Furthermore, they are pursuing a wind energy project in the country that provides a total installed capacity of 100 MW, to be developed in two stages. The Spanish company’s president explained that the project is already in the first phase.

ARGENTINA: Neuquén may have a major wind energy project.

Recently, the Provincial Energy Authority of Neuquén (EPEN) and the engineering firm SIMA SA signed a letter of intent to pursue a project to develop a wind farm in Auquinco.

The project involves the installation of 28 wind turbines with a power of 2 MW each, thus reaching a total generating capacity of 56 MW. To do so, they will require an investment amounting up to U$S 123 million.

CHILE: CODELCO will install a new wind farm.

The state company CODELCO, through its Codelco Norte division, recently announced its intention to pursue the construction of a wind farm in the town of Calama, located in the province of El Loa (Region II).

The project, called Calama Wind Farm, plans to have a generating capacity of 250 MW rated power. To date, it is in the initial stages including engineering studies, and soon they will be able to submit the environmental impact study.

ARGENTINA: Spanish Company signed an important agreement for the development of one of the largest wind farms in the world.

The Spanish group Guascor in recent days has signed an intention agreement with the Argentine government to build one of the world’s largest wind farms, which would come into operation by end-2013.

This project is located in Pico Truncado, north of the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, covering an area of 6,500 hectares. The wind farm will have 700 wind turbines installed, which together will produce between 600 and 900 MW. The investment is estimated at U$S 2.400 million.

VENEZUELA: A bi-national agreement allows a breakthrough in the production of wind energy.

Following a bilateral agreement between the state company Petroleos de Venezuela and the oil consortium Galp of Portugal, the University Simon Bolívar (USB) is developing a pilot program that plans the installation of 72 MW of wind energy in the Latin American country.

One of the specialists involved reported that 24 MW will be allocated to the island of Margarita, by locating facilities at three locations. Meanwhile, another 24 MW will be installed in Paraguaná (Falcón State) and the 24 MW will be located in Chacopata (State of Sucre).

The Latin American Wind Energy Association LAWEA, is pleased to announce the public forum entitled “Elements for Wind Power Development in Colombia”, which will take place in Medellin, Colombia, on July 07, 2009.

LAWEA is organizing this forum with the intention to explore the opportunities and barriers that wind power represents in the country, laying the groundwork for further discussion, analysis and support to its development, examining the development potential of this non-conventional renewable energy, assess the possibilities of technology generation in the country and assess the impact of including wind energy as a contribution to the country's energy matrix, among others.

Among the participants of the event are: Power generating companies, parliamentarians, congressmen and legislators, government agencies, research centers, universities, consulting firms, input manufacturers or service suppliers of the sector, banks, investors, industrials, as well as environmental and renewable energy organizations, etc.
