Investments in Solar and Wind Energy

The northern regions of Mexico have being attractive options for investments by foreign capital for the installation of solar and wind power plants, mainly in states like Sonora and Baja California.

That is the reason why the municipalities of Guaymas and the University of Sonora signed an agreement, which would assess the potential of electricity generation through wind power. The arrangements propose co working to develop the necessary information that allows to decide the best procedures for the alternative energy generation.

With the contract signed by the government of Guaymas, the University of Sonora and the Federal Electricity Commission, they would be working together so Guaymas could be the first city in the country to produce its own electricity through wind turbines. The main purpose would be to save up to 40% in the payment of the energy used by the public lighting that reaches $ 18 million pesos a year.

At this point in time foreign investments are presented in Baja California, as the Ministry of Economic Development has announced a recent investment of $ 3500 million, which was provide by the company Q-Cells; it is worth to mention that this is just a portion of an investment plan of at least $ 4900 million on a mid-term solar energy generating project.

At the same time, the Californian government wants to install 3000 MW of solar energy capacity for 2017, starting a program of incentives of $ 3300 million dollars, and has set a target of obtaining 20% of its energy from renewable sources.

In this matter, the Japanese "Kyocera" announced an investment of $ 40 million to expand its plant in Tijuana and multiply by 10 times the production of solar panels. The purpose is that the plant manufactures panels of 150 MW annual cumulative capacity by 2011.

That is why they also announced that a number of Asian, American and European companies that manufacture turbines, engines and propellers, have visited the Silicon Border park of Baja California; therefore, they are analyzing the possibility of installing inputs production plants to generate wind energy.
