CHILE: Spanish Group and Chilean company will work to create the largest wind farm in Latin America.

The Spanish group ENHOL (Eólica Navarra) in partnership with Chilean company Talinay Wind will create the largest wind farm in Latin America, whose investment will be more than a billion dollars and will have a capacity of 500 MW.

This park will be implemented in three phases; the first phase will begin in 2009 and the last phase until 2011. It is worth mentioning that the plant will have 243 wind turbines of between 2 and 3 MW, to be built on a land of about 10,000 hectares, at a location near the city of Ovalle, north of the Chilean capital.

PERU: GAZ & L´ENERGIE in Piura will explore the possibility of generating wind power.

On August 1st, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) from Peru granted 2 temporary concessions to the company GAZ & L´ENERGIE with a period of 24 months; this with the purpose of conducting studies to determine the viability of power generation activities in the future wind farms: Park-the Negritos Brea and Yacila-Islilla Park, located in Piura.

The park Negritos-La Brea, once built, would have the capacity to generate around 180 MW and will be located in the district of La Brea, in the province of Talar, while in the central Yacila- Islilla, 80 MW will be installed in the province of Paita, both in Piura.

PERU: SOWITEC gets grant to study the feasibility of generating wind power.

The company SOWITEC Renewable Energies of Peru has received the grant from the Ministry of Energy and Mines to evaluate the possibility of increasing electricity generation in the districts of Piura and Moquegua. Such permission will last a period of 24 months.

The company will do the analysis in the future Central Wind Park Lagunita in Piura.

CHILE: Wind Power projects for the coastal zone.

At this moment in Chile, there are 12 projects for the construction or expansion of wind farms, primarily in coastal areas, in order to harness the power and wind power in that region. Although some of these projects have already been decided, others are in the process of being; this, according to the National Energy Commission of Chile.

Taken together, all these projects added over 800 MW of power, that same to be provided to the national electricity transmission system. The aim of these projects is to exploit the natural capacity, since Chile has 4,000 km of coastline.

CHILE: Mining company is considering to use alternative energy in their operations.

ANTOFAGASTA MINERALS, a private mining company of Chile, is evaluating the possibility of using wind and solar energy to operate its copper deposits; situation by which the group is investing 3,000 million in mining projects in the Third and Fourth regions.

The company announced that they are developing research into energy efficiency in the fields of unconventional renewable energies, in this case the wind power .

BRAZIL: Funding manufacturers of blades for wind power.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) financed the Brazilian company Advanced Technology Systems (TECSIS) which is engaged in the manufacture of blades used in wind turbines; such financing was $ 120 million and is earmarked for debt restructuring of TECSIS and for the investment in new production lines.

It is worth noting that this funding is the first to be awarded by a multilateral organization to encourage the manufacture of components intended for wind energy equipment.

MÉXICO: INGETEAM will produce more than 100 power converters for wind turbines.

The company INGETEAM, through its subsidiary in Mexico, will produce more than 100 power converters for INGECON WIND turbines during 2008; this firm is located in the state of Nuevo Leon, an area regarded as a pillar of development in Mexico.

The company INGETEAM informed through a statement that this team consists of a set of power electronics allowing power generation in a wide range of speed of electric generator and, therefore, wind speed. These converters will be installed primarily in Mexico, the United States and Canada.

BRAZIL: ENEL Y SOWITEC sign agreement to develop wind power projects.

On August 6th, was released through a communiqué that the Italian electricity company ENEL and the German Renewable Energy SOWITEC signed an agreement to build wind projects in Brazil for a total capacity of 1,000 MW.

With this agreement, the Italian company across its businesses in Brazil, ENEL LATIN AMERICA and ENEL BRAZIL PARTICIPACOES, acquires exclusive rights for the management of eight projects and the possibility of buying them after they are made by the Brazilian subsidiary of SOWITEC.

URUGUAY: Encouraging Wind Power generation.

The government of Uruguay was fully induced in the development of alternative energies; however, the closest alternative to expand the potential of electricity generation points to the use of wind energy.

It is prepared for next year, a project to install 250 MW of wind power within five years and with the participation of private companies, which have an investment ranging $ 425 million dollars.

MEXICO: Expecting installation of wind energy manufacturers in Reynosa.

In the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, it is expected to install enterprises engaged in the manufacture of wind turbines and towers; this, because of the recent increase in the production of such equipment for wind power generation.

This situation has led to government authorities of the state of Tamaulipas show their interest in producing electricity through wind power, which is why they are considering liability studies to determine whether it is feasible to install this kind of clean energy plants in the town of Reynosa.

LAWEA will participate as exhibitor and speaker at this important event.


LAWEA will participate in the 3th Latin-American Energy Symposium

Host by the National Chamber of Electrical Manufacturers CANAME it will be held at the World Trade Center on Mexico City the 3th Latin-American Energy Symposium.

LAWEA will make a presentation about the trends in the Latin American Wind Power market with the aim to continue working in popularization, education and promotion of this renewable energy trough the region.
