NEWS PANAMA: Spanish Company could invest in Panama on wind power. It has been reported through the manager of the Electricity Generation Company (EGESA) that the Spanish company IBERDROLA will begin with measurements of the strength of the wind in the Central American country to install a wind energy farm. It is important mentioning that the companies SANTA FE ENERGY and ENRILEWS are already making measurements of wind power in Panama. Likewise, the Iberian company signed a memorandum of agreement with EGESA to explore some places where it can develop projects in electricity, because the country can make use of wind to generate alternative energy. For this reason, the Spanish company already has identified certain points and has proceeded to measure the winds to determine whether it is feasible to install turbines to produce energy. Similarly, ENRILEWS and SANTA FE ENERGY are currently in the process to install 2 wind farms by 2009 at the latest. The development of wind farm projects are based on studies that showed that Panama has great potential in different areas. ENRILEWS, a company composed of Spanish investors, are waiting for the approval of the environmental impact study, to generate not later than 2009 the first megawatts of wind power. There are already conducted evaluations for 8 farms, but decided to open preferably with Toabré in the province of Coclé and Mendoza in the Chorera, with a capacity of 400 MW. Simultaneously SANTA FE ENERGY Company has advanced studies and measurements to install wind turbines with a capacity of 81 MW. This project has funding to build the Santa Fe wind farm in Veraguas.
