COSTA RICA: Latin American Model in power generation through renewable energy.

The vice minister of environment of Germany, announced during his visit to the Guanacaste wind farm in this country, that Costa Rica is a model for Latin America, since it generates 90% of its electricity through renewable sources; it will be exemplary for other countries when it becomes, in 2021, the first country in the world where the energy supply is 100% from renewable energy.

It is remarkable that the Guanacaste wind farm is projected by the company JUWI of WÖRRSTADT of Germany, who are also building the biggest wind farm in Central America in collaboration with local and international partners, same that has a total of 55 turbines with a capacity of 49.5 MW.

ARGENTINA: Wind Power will be generated to supply rural communities.

Under the Program of Renewable Energy in Wind Power Markets, they started to install 1,500 wind turbines for supplying electricity to interior provincial areas where the conventional electric network does not reach, in the region of Chubut.

It is important to mention that the installation starts after the verification of the performance of the three wind turbines that were tested in Paso de Indios and El Maitén. The installation of these 1,500 turbines started and should be finished within a year.

ARGENTINA: Begins the construction of the Wind Farm of La Rioja.

The director of Infrastructure Projects of the Ministry of Public Works, announced that they have started the installation of the anemometric tower, which will measure the winds in the wind farm of La Rioja.

Once installed, this tower will allow making the necessary adjustments prior to the installation of the first turbine in the zone; the turbines will have a capacity to generate 2MW each.

URUGUAY: The Government is interested in developing Wind Power.

On October 14th, via a state energy official of the UTE, the government of Uruguay expressed their interest in developing wind power with a capacity of 250 MW, and they could start during the next 5 years.

The UTE expect to complete the installation of the turbines in La Sierra de Caracoles Park in November; this wind farm will have a capacity of 10MW. It was reported that 2 wind turbines are completely installed, and the 3 remaining turbines will be mounted in a span of 5 to 7 days.

CHILE: Presented Environmental Submit for Wind Project in Los Vilos.

A Wind project was announced few days ago, which will be named La Cachina, and would need an investment of 123 million dollars. 33 turbines will be installed, with a total capacity of 66 MW.

This wind project belongs to the Spanish company ENER-RENOVA, and they expect the wind farm to have an annual average production of 173 GW/hour per year.

CHILE: Wind Farm will need an investment of 100 million dollars.

On the past October 6th, it was reported that the Belgian company, SUEZ ENERGY ANDINO, and the Spanish company ENHOL, will invest 100 million dollar for the construction of a wind farm in the south the city of La Serena, which will have an installed capacity of 38 MW that will be connected to the Central Interconnected System (CIS).

It was indicated that the work will begin on the next month, and the wind farm would be operating in July 2009. Also, it was said that the company already counts with the signed Environmental Impact Statement.

PERU: MEM grants concessions for wind studies to generate electricity.

On the past October 8th, in Lima, Peru, the Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that they granted temporary concessions for the company SOLEOL, with the purpose of developing studies for the generation of electricity through wind power in the municipalities of Ancash, Lima and Libertad.

Therefore, the company will hold studies in the future wind farms: Casma, Huacho and Pacasmayo, with an expected installed capacity of 50 MW, each; so, it is planned that the total installed capacity of the three projects will be 150 MW, and the investigation will have a term of two years.
