CHILE: The mining company “El Toqui” will initiate construction of a wind farm in the XI region

It will be, at the moment, the only Zinc mine in the world using wind energy. The installed power, of 1.5 MW, will represent a reduction in diesel consumption of 12% to 18%. Construction starts on December 2009 and is expected to begin operations in May of 2010.

The project was developed like a joint venture between El Toqui and Seawind, who started measurements at the beginning of this year, at Doña Rosa and Elefantes hills, with the installation of two 30 meters masts.

The results threw positive answers for the implementation of a project that consists of six turbines of 275 KW, with total power of 1.5 MW.

The project will be put under Kyoto’s Protocol guidelines, with the purpose of certifying emissions reduction and to participate in the carbon bonds market.
