BRAZIL: 330 wind power projects totaling 10 GW, approved for the 14 of December bidding

The contracts will be for 20 years and the wind parks must start operation in 2012. The fixed price for MW/hour is U$S 109 dollars. The country’s wind power potential is superior to 250,000 MW, in a surface area of 71,000 km2.

At the beginning of the year a total of 13,000 MW were submitted for consideration, which caused a three week delay. At the moment, Brazil has little more than 600 (MW) of eolic energy in operation, as a result of a government incentive program denominated Proinfa.

More than 60% of the wind parks are in Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul, they have respectively, 105 projects with 3.6 GW, 108 projects with 2.5 GW and 67 projects with 2.2 GW.
The purchase of eolic energy reinforces Brazil’s position in face of the Copenhagen Conference on climate, to maintain a mix generation with a strong presence in renewable energy.

The Indian company Suzlon is trying to install a wind manufacturing facility, and several Spanish companies like Iberdrola, aspire to obtain wind parks.

State Brazilian Group CEEE and Enerfin do Brazil, part of the Spanish Grupo Elecnor, are going to participate in the bidding to develop more than 300 MW of wind power projects.
