NEWS BRAZIL: New wind farm Paracuru in operation. A North American company invested 1 billion of reales for the construction of 5 wind farms. The first one was inaugurated last Thursday 4th of December, by the company SIIF ENERGIES, in Paracuru, 90 km away from Fortaleza at the state of Ceará; and the country will receive the remaining ones until the next year 2009. The wind farm Paracuru has an installed power of 23.4 MW, generated by 12 Suzlon model S88 turbines, and an investment of 115 million reales. ARGENTINA: The Minister of Infrastructure referred to the wind farm Arauco as the Bicentennial project. IMPSA emerges as sole bidder. The wind farm is located in the zone called La Puerta, in Arauco, La rioja. The turbines will be installed in this place, and the energy matrix of the region will increase to 25 MW. The first turbine has already been acquired; however, 11 more turbines of 2 MW have been agreed with the government, and it is expected that they are installed during the next year, along with other projects that will benefit various sectors of the society. CHILE: New wind farm will be installed, supplying electricity to the north zone. The company SEAWIND ENGINEERING has begun processing for its second wind project in the country, located in the province of Tocopilla, Antofagasta; the farm is named Quillagua, with an installed capacity of 100 MW, and will require a investment of approximately $ 230 million. It was reported that the company wants to install 50 turbines of 2 MW of capacity on the wind farm Quillagua, in an area of 1241 hectares located in a desert region, and would be connected to the Big North Interconnected System (BNIS). In addition, it is expected to start the construction in March, because the turbines will arrive in September next year. MEXICO: The wind project of Tehuantepec Isthmus expects to be the most important in Latin America. The wind project that will be located in the region of the Istmo, hopes to raise Mexico by 2012, among the top 10 countries worldwide in power generation through wind energy, so that the Director of Strategic Projects of the Economy Secretary of Oaxaca, considered that it is the biggest in Latin America of renewable energy, both for investment and by the saving of gas emissions. The project envisages the construction of 9 wind farms until 2012; these farms are made through the scheme of self-slaughter, to generate about 2000 MW and attract an investment of about $ 6 billion dollars. LATINOAMERICA; Spanish company has projects with investment exceeding 800 million Euros in Latin America. It was said on last December 7th, in Madrid, Spain, that the Spanish company IBERDROLA ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION is developing several projects in Latin America with an investment amounting to 800 million Euros, highlighting the areas of renewable energy, as well as the nuclear sector and the transport and distribution of electricity. Its major projects in the region are located in Brazil and Mexico. In Mexico, the company is building the wind farm la Venta III for IBERDROLA RENEWABLES, with an installed power of 100 MW and an investment of 35 million Euros. CHILE; Company ENEL announces big investment for renewable energies in Latin America. On December 1st, at a press conference held in Santiago, Chile, the Italian company ENEL announced that they will invest 1.090 million Euros in Latin America on a continuous basis until 2012; this announcement was made during a conference of geothermal energy held in the South American country. It is important to note that the company is currently developing wind projects in Brazil and Mexico, while they are developing geothermal projects in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Chile. ARGENTINA: PEPSA receives authorization for its 50 MW wind farm in the Province of Buenos Aires. PEPSA has obtained authorization from the Ministry of Energy as a new agent of the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM), for its wind farm "Vientos del Secano" which will have an estimated output of 50 megawatts and will be located in Mayor Buratovich in the municipality of Villarino, South of the Province of Buenos Aires. This municipality already has experience in wind power generation, given by the two turbines of 600 KW installed by the Electric Cooperative of Mayor Buratovich in the year 97. The company PEPSA of the Group ABO Wind Renewable Energy SA, integrated by local and European capitals, informed that they have been working in the site for 3 years now. Previously to the authorization, they submitted the Study of Environmental Impact and the correspondent electric studies to various state bodies. For the wind resource assessment, a wind speed and direction measurement tower was installed at a height of 80m. PANAMA: Location for WIND EXPO 2009 established. The Latin American Wind Energy Association, LAWEA; is proud to announce the second version of the Latin American Wind Power Conference and Exhibition WIND EXPO Panama 2009. Giving continuity to the development of the first version of WIND EXPO held in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico in 2008, and in which the fulfilling of our goal of "Unveiling the Power of Latin America’s Wind” was a success. LAWEA now invites you to join us at Panama City in our WIND EXPO 2009, to continue with our mission, strengthen the Latin American Wind Power business. MEXICO: LAWEA will have its first workshop at Huatulco, Oaxaca. LAWEA is going to host its first workshop on March 26 & 27, 2009; about: “Development, Implementation and Operation of Wind Farms in Latin America”. The location for this workshop will be the city of Huatulco, in the Oaxaca state, main pole of the Latin American Wind Power development. The call for papers for this workshop is already open.
