News CHILE: New wind farm will be installed, supplying electricity to the north zone.
The company SEAWIND ENGINEERING has begun processing for its second wind project in the country, located in the province of Tocopilla, Antofagasta; the farm is named Quillagua, with an installed capacity of 100 MW, and will require a investment of approximately $ 230 million. It was reported that the company wants to install 50 turbines of 2 MW of capacity on the wind farm Quillagua, in an area of 1241 hectares located in a desert region, and would be connected to the Big North Interconnected System (BNIS). In addition, it is expected to start the construction in March, because the turbines will arrive in September next year. Moreover, the application was presented to the System of Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA). It should be mentioned that the owners of the initiative, are also linked to a similar project of 40 MW, which CODELCO will develop in the vicinity of the mine Gabriela Mistral. Additionally, the company said that they will work to manage the collection and sale of the carbon credits that are associated with the developed displacement of energy with fossil fuels in different plants in the area, in a way that the procedure is associated with the Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol.
