PUERTO RICO: The Guayanilla wind park will not be constructed

The approval for Windmar Renewable Energy, Inc.´s Wind Park was canceled due to the bad location of the project, sited in a forest of extraordinary natural value. The Puerto Rican Ornithological Society (SOPI) marked this as a right step. SOPI´s spokesman emphasized that in Puerto Rico there are better locations for eolic projects. From the beginning the project received the disapproval of the scientific community, of the municipal assemblies and mayors of the region, the bordering communities and the local and international ecological groups.

When annulling the endorsement, the assembly recognized that its approval was precipitated, since the Environmental impact declaration approved by the assembly of environmental quality is under opposition in the courts.

The company started road construction and embankments, in areas of dry forest in Guayanilla and Yauco, causing the destruction of thousands of trees and hitting important archaeological deposits, moist soils, critical habitat and other irreplaceable natural elements, including the habitat of the Concho Toad and the Guabairo, both unique species of Puerto Rico and in critical danger of extinction.

SOPI´s spokesman maintained that, during the evaluation process, the assembly had the opportunity to evaluate numerous irregularities. Also, he reaffirmed the support - from the organization he represents, to the generation of energy through renewable sources, where the use of the ground is appropriate and the natural resources are not committed.
