NEWS MEXICO: The preliminary agenda for the first LAWEA Workshop is now available! Continuing with its labor of promotion, education and defense of wind power in the region, LAWEA presents its first technical workshop, as an answer to the demand for knowledge of the implications of this technology relatively new for Latin America, from a deeper point of view. By opening our technical workshops, we will explore the main aspects that include the development of a wind farm, from its analysis, evaluation and study, until its implementation, operation and maintenance. We will see practical experiences of the farms installed in the region, reported by the leaders of wind development in Latin America. BRAZIL: The Company “Energias de Portugal” EDP will develop renewable energy along with PETROBRAS. On December 12, in the city of Lisbon, it was announced that the company “Energias de Portugal” (EDP) made an agreement with the Brazilian oil company PETROBRAS, looking forward to produce electricity from wind power; in addition, they will develop thermal power, hydro and biomass projects simultaneously. It should be noted that the company Energias de Portugal, through its subsidiary EDP RENOVAVEIS and PETROBRAS, are interested in the development of biofuels, meanwhile, the Brazilian oil company conducted a comprehensive study of wind potential, which found that nearly 75% of it is located northeast of the country. NICARAGUA; Mexican entrepreneurs are interested in developing wind energy. On December 10, the president of Nicaragua said that he met with Mexican entrepreneurs who are interested in learning about investment opportunities for wind power development in the south of Nicaragua. It should be noted that these Mexican businessmen are linked to the U.S car builder company GENERAL MOTORS. URUGUAY; The main objective: developing renewable energy. In Uruguay, renewable energy projects started being developed recently, mainly of wind power. This is why there are currently 3 proposals with different impact. As a response to the interest, there is the wind farm that was inaugurated at the end of October in Rocha. The 3 new proposals were identified by a research held in Montevideo, study that planned the installation of the wind farms in Punta Yeguas, the NORDEX’s plant over Cesar Mayo Guitierrez, and Cuchilla Pereira near the racecourse of Las Piedras. However, this last one is the most appropriate. VENEZUELA: GAMESA breaks into the Venezuelan market with the installation of 100 MW in what will be the country’s first Wind Farm. The company will supply 76 wind turbine generators to PDVSA amounting to almost €116 million through its subsidiary MADE. Gamesa positions itself as one of the main wind turbine suppliers in the Latin American market by closing this deal. Gamesa Corporación Tecnológica has broken into the Latin American wind energy market, more specifically Venezuela, through its subsidiary MADE. The Spanish company has reached an agreement with the country’s main energy group Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) for the supply of 76 AE61-1,320 kW 60 Hz wind turbine generators, amounting to a total power of 100 MW. CHILE: Turbines are transported from the United States. The company COMPOSITIVE TECHNOLOGY Corp. (CTC) announced on last December 16 through its subsidiary DEWIND Inc. that they have sent the first group of 5 wind turbines model D8-2000; also, in the next two weeks they will be sending the second order, by which 5 more turbines will arrive. It is worth mentioning that the turbines are being transported by sea to Chile; this is why they were first shipped to Houston. BRAZIL: Wind Farm will start operations in Pedra do Sal. In Parnaíba, the inauguration of the first wind farm in Piaui was stipulated for December 20. The project is owned by a private company with a budget of 108 million `reales´ and started being installed on last August. The wind farm is located in an area of 540 hectares on the beach of Pedra do Sal. In an interview, the engineer responsible for the construction informed that this wind farm will have the capacity to generate 18MW starting on this month of December, ensuring that the supply of the city of Parnaíba will be improved, because the winds of this area are frequent. BRAZIL: Bids for Wind Power in 2009. The Brazilian government is promoting the realization of the first bid exclusively for wind energy in the coming year 2009. It was mentioned that the country needed a program of bids that have duration of between 3 and 10 years with the goal of contracting 1 GW of wind energy per year. In this announcement, they indicated that this first bid can be an encouragement for the major manufacturers of wind turbines to be installed in Brazil. However, not only of imported products will remain the wind power sector, because according to the high rate of nationalization of components, something like 65%, and a program for 3 years would be enough to stimulate the Brazilian industry of wind turbines. It is hoped that this first bid will conduct a specific program for long-term wind energy.
